How Are Handmade Leather Wallets Made?

Handmade wallets pass through precision steps: pattern cutting, edge skiving, hand stitching with waxed thread, and edge burnishing.

Pattern design and hand-cutting

The artisan cuts the leather parts by hand using sharp knives and metal clicker templates. This allows them to inspect the hide closely and avoid any natural scars or weak sections.

The saddle stitching technique

The holes are punched using pricking irons, and two needles are threaded on a single waxed linen thread. The stitches are tensioned by hand, creating a robust seam that will not unravel.

Edge beveling and burnishing

The raw edges are shaved, sanded, and rubbed repeatedly with Tokonole and natural beeswax using wooden slickers. This heat seals the fibers, creating a glossy, smooth, and highly durable edge.

Assembly and final conditioning

The inner and outer parts are glued, stitched, cleaned, and conditioned with natural waxes before a final quality check to ensure all card slots and pockets align perfectly.

FAQ

Why is hand stitching durable?

Saddle stitching uses two needles; if one stitch breaks, the rest remain fully intact.
